Ballinascreen Credit Union takes deposits from persons under the age of 16. These are referred to as “junior” or “minor” accounts. The maximum amount a minor can have in an account is £10,000. Once a junior member reaches the age of 16, they are required to either withdraw the balance of the account or to join the credit union as a full member so the balance of their junior account can be transferred to that account.
An account for a minor shall be opened by means of an application form signed by the minor’s parent or guardian and if he/she is able to write, by the minor. An account can be opened by a third party in a minor’s name where the minor is unable to give the necessary receipts. The account can be opened by one or more persons on behalf of the minor and in the minor’s sole name.
